The End of Professional Fishing in the Swan

The State Government is to push legislation to buy out the last of commercial fishing in the Swan River. If you're imagining Japanese driftnets pillaging the Swan leaving sad families holding empty crab nets, then you're wrong. The extent of commercial fishing is Neil Oliver and his dinghy catching around 10 tonnes of crabs year - approximately a fifth of what's caught by recreational fishing.

To have a decent local food culture, there has to be local food. Having local provides a sense of place and history (licences date back to European settlement) and being able to buy it means it's available to everybody, restaurants and consumers.

WAFIC has more at its Seafood Lover's site. If you're after the Minister for Fisheries, he's here.
