Man Reads SPICE, Converts to Cheeses

We're Radio National tragics here and let out a collective woohoo when we heard an interviewee, Peter McClelland, explain his "cheese change" from Perth to Albany as;
"I happened to pick up this local magazine called Spice, it's a gourmet foodie magazine, and I was reading an article about the Albany Farmers Market and I gave them a call to organise to be introduced to some of the producers."

You can listen to the whole Life Matters episode here (and go woohoo at the appropriate point).

This issue's cheesy goodness is Ringwould Goats Cheese - Albany cheesemakers and successors to the Kervella goat stock.

SPICE Issue 14 Autumn

SpiceAut09Cover400.jpg

Long time readers, familiar with our red and golden hued Autumn spines, will be surprised to find it's a pistachio green this time round. Gracing the cover is maker of heavenly sweet treats, Rochelle Adonis. On the inside, we sample the richly diverse and growing Western Australian olive oil industry and show you how to make pasta from scratch and talk to the people who'll make it for you if you can't be bothered because you've had an especially long day at work. Wine tasting from Geographe, beer notes from Duckstein, and restaurant reviews from the city. Season a frying pan as easily as you might a slightly bland bowl of soup. Plant some root vegetables, cook kangaroo, and visit the Geographe region secure in the knowledge you'll know where to go. Lattes in the laneways and wine in the street. Stunning recipes from local chefs Graeme Shapiro, Stephen Clarke and Ben Andrijasevich. And more...

The End of Professional Fishing in the Swan

The State Government is to push legislation to buy out the last of commercial fishing in the Swan River. If you're imagining Japanese driftnets pillaging the Swan leaving sad families holding empty crab nets, then you're wrong. The extent of commercial fishing is Neil Oliver and his dinghy catching around 10 tonnes of crabs year - approximately a fifth of what's caught by recreational fishing.

To have a decent local food culture, there has to be local food. Having local provides a sense of place and history (licences date back to European settlement) and being able to buy it means it's available to everybody, restaurants and consumers.

WAFIC has more at its Seafood Lover's site. If you're after the Minister for Fisheries, he's here.

The Great Wine Estates of Western Australia Fundraiser

No, not a tough vintage; it's actually to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Busselton Medical Research Foundation.

The Great Wine Estates is an internationally recognised union of Western Australian Wineries including Cape Mentelle, Cullen Wines, Devil's Lair, Houghton, Howard Park, Xanadu, Vasse Felix, Howard Park, Leeuwin Estate Moss Wood, Pierro, Pantagenet, and Voyager Estate.

There'll be an informal tasting as well as the auction, so you'll have a fantastic opportunity to try some limited and unreleased vintages as well as being able to buy some wines in support of a good cause.

WHERE Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Peppermint Grove
WHEN March 12th
TICKETS $35 per person, all inclusive
CONTACT melissa@robinbirch.com.au or 0418 90 2121.

The fundraising auction will start at 7.45pm, and will be conducted by specialist wine auctioneer, Andrew Caillard MW from Langtons in Sydney. 25 lots will go under the hammer. The lots include original artworks, large format bottles, museum parcels, vertical selections, as well as food, wine and tasting experiences.

Also in fundraising. The bushfires in Victoria received $500,000 from Burswood Entertainment Complex, $80,000 from the Fraser's Restaurant Fundraiser Event, and a donation of a cheque and some well-consideredcases of beer for the Country Fire Authority in Victoria from the Perth Slow Food Convivium.
