End of a fishing era

AntoninoSpinella.jpg

The WA Fishing Industry Council is hosting an event to signify the end of commercial scalefish fishing off Fremantle and the metropolitan area at 10am on Thursday November 15 at Fishing Boat Harbour.

Commercial scalefish fishing will be banned in the metropolitan area. The ban will be put in place on November 16 and the fish stocks reallocated to recreational fishers.

Entering Fishing Boat Harbour for the last time will be Professional fisherman of 25 years, Antonino Spinella . Antonio will tie up at the Fishermen's Memorial Jetty and bring his last catch to shore which will be filleted and cooked on a BBQ by Chef Don Hancey and served to invited guests and interested bystanders.

The story of Antonino's life will be in our Summer issue and this makes for a sad footnote.

There's still a petition on calling for the restrictions being fairly applied both professional and recreational fishers.
